“Everyone has a place in his soul where outsiders are admitted only very rarely - a hidden corner with intimate dreams, wishes and desires. On her CD “Secret Garden”, the Japanese singer and voice artist Haco, erstwhile frontwoman of After Dinner, pays tribute to this haven where fantasy and reality are so much intertwined that the distinction between the two is barely perceptible. Haco has always had a predilection for music that wafts from this place like a haze caressing the senses, but this is the first time it serves so emphatically as the unifying theme for an album. In the opening track “Over the Unfinished Bridge” she invites you to enter your own secret garden, ending the album with the tinkling of bells while whispering that she will leave no trace. In the intervening songs, she offers a collage of processed environmental recordings, contributions by musicians that she has guided through electronic circuits with a delicate but steady touch, and soft dreamy vocals. She creates backdrops of sloshing waves, softened sounds of the Berlin subway, a reversed brass band, flights of ringing bells, and instruments placed within the vast reverberation of a tunnel. Against these evocative backdrops she sings texts about a door appearing in the dunes, banks of clouds with only vague shadows remaining as traces of memory, and floating in blue moonlight. It sounds like pop, but pop that has been warped to excess, stretched far beyond the confines of its narrow framework. These are liquid projections, caught in music and cast on fading veils of clouds. This is a dream that you hope will never end. Alas, this CD has a runtime of only 45 minutes. There is only one thing you can do - you'll have to create your own dreams, and go looking for that secret garden within yourself.”

“誰にでも心のなかに、他者がめったに立ち入れない場所がある…内なる夢、祈り、願望とともに秘められた心の片すみに。日本のシンガー、ヴォイスアーティスト、かつてアフターディナーの中心人物でもあったHacoのアルバム「Secret Garden」は、ファンタジーとリアリティーの領域がかろうじて判別できるような両者が織りあわさった、そんな心のすみかへの捧げもの。Hacoはいつだって、どこかほんわりと感覚をなでるようなところから浮かびあがる音楽を愛好してきた、けれどアルバムを通してこのテーマを前面にだしたのは本作が初めてだろう。オープニングのトラック「完成をみない橋の向こうに」では、きみを自身のシークレット・ガーデンへと招待する彼女だが、囁いているまに名残をとどめることなく、キンコンという鐘の音とともにアルバムは閉じられていく。展開される楽曲には、彼女によって加工されたエクスペリメンタルな環境音のコラージュ、揺るがぬタッチだが繊細にエレクトリック・サーキットを通して道筋づけられた共作ミュージシャンの寄贈物、そのソフトでドリーミーな歌声。そして彼女は、ぱしゃつく波の音、静かなベルリンの地下鉄の音、時間反転されたようなブラスバンドの音、飛び交うベルの響き、楽器に付加された巨大なトンネル残響などを背景に描きだす。またそれらが喚起されるのに反して彼女は、砂漠にたち現れる扉、おぼろげな記憶のなかの影と雲のかたまり、浮かび上がる蒼い月光といった詞を歌う。聴いた感触はポップだが、狭い枠組からはるかにはみ出て、過度にひねりあげられたポップなのだ。これらは流体状のプロジェクション…消えゆく雲のベールのうえに編みあげられた、音楽のなかにある。これはきみが果てることのないようにと願う夢さ。ああ、CDは45分長なんだよ。きみのできることはただひとつ…きみ自身の夢を創ることなのさ、そしてきみ自身のシークレット・ガーデンを見つけに行くんだよ。”
